Biodiversity is a
unique scientific journal,
specifically designed to
present conservation and
research information about
the natural world to a
broad audience of
scientists, educators,
policy makers,
conservationists, science
writers, naturalists,
students and the general
public. It aims to raise
an appreciation and deeper
understanding of species,
ecosystems, and the
interconnectedness of the
living world.
Today one of the main
threats to the integrity
of the natural world is
that 95% or more of its
contents of approximately
30 million different life
forms and their immense
diversity are unknown to
science. Because of this
rudimentary knowledge most
people have not been fully
aware of the living world
around them and how it
functions. This ignorance
has led to the
mismanagement, misuse and
destruction of
biodiversity at such a
rate that without sound
conservation efforts
biodiversity will be
reduced by 50% in the next
50 years. Such a reduction
seriously threatens the
balance of nature and the
integrity of life on
Earth. Recent Environics
polls reveal that not many
Canadians understand what
biodiversity is whereas
over 50% of Canadians are
concerned about the state
of the environment. This
indicates clearly that
most people are not aware
that biodiversity is the
driving force in
perpetually maintaining a
healthy, habitable
environment.
Biodiversity is
distributed to peoples in
all corners of the world,
particularly to those in
developing countries where
the majority of the
world's species are
located. Because of
serious lack of knowledge,
weak infrastructure, and
rapid pace of development,
biodiversity in these
countries is particularly
at risk. It is believed
that this journal with its
focus on various aspects
of biodiversity and
conservation is
particularly useful in
